Note
to the Student:
Campus Coaching is designed to provide you with a confidential, caring, non-judgmental forum in which to express difficult thoughts, concerns and experiences. We follow strict regulations regarding client confidentiality, privacy and privileged information. In addition, it is our belief and our goal to provide an environment that is caring, non-judgmental, and conducive to change.

A Note to Parents:
As parents of young adults it is often difficult
to change the patterns of child rearing as your
child matures into adulthood. As concerned parents
it is normal to want to know what your child is
doing and planning. However, sometimes instead of
inviting conversation with our children it in fact
closes them down.
As therapists /coaches we
are aware of the delicate balance between young
adults and their parents. We provide Campus Coaching
to bridge just this connection. Our goal it to help
them find solutions to problems and unanswered questions
in their lives. Sometimes they are able to share
thoughts with professionals because they are not
emotionally connected to them like you are as their
parent.
It is also important that
they feel safe to express their feelings and thoughts
in order to open up the possibility for healthy
change, which after all is everyone’s’ goal.

Stage I: Getting In
Maybe you are a high school upper classmen
and you are beginning to think about college. Does
any of this sound familiar to you?
 |
I am
"so done with
high school", but secretly I am not
sure I am ready to be on my own.
-
I want to go away to
college, And
I want to stay home.
-
I worry about making
the wrong choice and ending up at a
college I don't like.
-
I worry about looking
like a loser or disappointing my parents.
- I worry I won’t be able to handle college.
-
I feel anxious a lot
of the time and would love to have someone
I could call for help.
-
My parents and family
are "just too close" even though they
really care about me
|
Stage II: Campus Life
If you are a college freshman or sophomore
you are past Stage I and now you may be struggling
with trying to find that balance in your campus
life.
Do any of the following statements
"fit for you"?
- I love the freedom of college BUT I have some trouble organizing my days and my time.
- I know I shouldn't be missing classes, but no one is here to
"make me go".
- All my friends are trying "stuff" to be able to stay awake longer and study, should I?
- Money seems to go so quickly. I really don’t know where I spend it.
- It is hard adjusting to dorm life; too many people all the time.
- I worry about getting all this work done. It is so much more than I had in high school.
- Even though there are lots of people around, I feel lonely a lot of the time.
- I don’t want my parents to think I can’t handle this.
- It has been a long time since my parents were my age; they don’t really get what goes on here.
- I feel anxious a lot of the time and would love to have someone I could call for help. My parents and family are “just too close” even though they really care about me.

Stage III:
For those of you who are two years or less
from graduating from college, congratulations on
your accomplishment this far! We also know you are
probably beginning to think about a whole new set
of issues.
Perhaps you have already heard this one: "What
are you going to do when you graduate"? That can
be a confusing and frustrating question. Parents
and relatives probably are asking you this question
all the time, and each time you hear, it adds angst
to your search.
 |
- Do any of these
questions "sound familiar"
- Still not sure after almost four years?
- What do you mean you don’t know what you want
to do?
- You are almost done what are you doing next?
- Your friends all seem to have a direction,
why don’t you?
- It is time you grew up, what do you want to
do with your life?
- I am anxious a lot of the time and would love
to have someone I could call for help. My
parents and family are "just too close" even
though they really care about me

Solutions to College Conundrums
Imagine
what it would be like to be able to better understand
your personal learning type ?
- Could you make better choices on choosing
"where and when" to study?
- How about when working in groups on projects,
dealing with your roommates or just in general
to "get along and better understand the people
in your life"?
- Could you make better choices on choosing
"where and when" to study?
|
 |
Imagine what it would be like to develop
your own personal map in figuring out what you want
to do with your life?
- Would it be useful in narrowing down the choices?
- Could asking the right questions help you find
your niche?
Imagine how useful it would be to be able
to discuss your thoughts without feeling you were
disappointing someone you love?
- Would it be useful to be able to talk with a
caring, nonjudgmental professional who has experience
and training?
- Would you like to know that you can call , email
or visit when you need to?
